It is between the late first and early second century the arrival of Christianity in Africa. His encounter with Islam first raises the question of what was the state of Christianity at the time of the arrival of the Muslim conquerors. The answer is largely conjectural, given the scarcity of sources. To explain the speed of Muslim influence, we invoke the weak Christian impregnation in small urban and especially rural people. Given what was Christian Africa Tertullian to Augustine, and what is known about the extraordinary density of African bishops, it is difficult to accept this interpretation without examination.
